ISLAMABAD — Satrang Gallery opened its latest exhibition, ‘The Shape of Home,’ featuring the evocative works of Farrukh Adnan, Mamoona Riaz, and Wajiha Batool. The exhibition explores the concept of “home” not as a static location, but as a fluid condition shaped by personal history, migration, and the evolving landscapes of contemporary life.

Through a diverse array of mediums—including miniature painting traditions, intricate paper construction, and textile-inspired motifs—the artists navigate the delicate balance between longing and belonging.

The Artists

  • Farrukh Adnan investigates the “in-between” spaces created by displacement. His work reflects on how horizons shift and memories reshape landscapes, capturing the quiet tension between presence and absence.
  • Mamoona Riaz utilizes the traditional shamsa pattern, reimagining it as a mechanical structure of cogs to symbolize the machine-like nature of modern cities. Her three-dimensional paper cuttings and drawings transform maps into living organisms that archive collective memories of changing urban environments.
  • Wajiha Batool draws from her Hazara heritage, using abstract floral imagery to explore rituals of life, loss, and resilience. By layering meticulously dyed dots of wasli paper, she preserves fading traditions and maps the aerial routes of dispersed and resettled communities.

A Shifting Terrain

At the heart of the exhibition is the recurring gesture of mapping. These personal cartographies serve as tools for orientation within unstable terrains defined by migration and urbanization. As communities disperse and histories fragment, ‘The Shape of Home’ invites viewers to witness how identity is continuously remade through inherited rituals and the fragments of cities lived in.
